We all woke up today mourning the tragedy in Las Vegas. Our first impulse is often to ask Why? Why do these senseless tragedies happen? Like many of you, I have been refreshing the news to see if any more details have been released, wondering what would motivate someone to such a heinous and wicked deed. But tragedies like this should do more than make us wonder why people do these horrific acts of terror. They should drive us to consider our own mortality and the truth that one day we all will face death.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus was approached by some people who wanted to know why so many of their fellow Jews had been killed by Pilate’s brutality. Jesus’ answer is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago. As you pray for those who lost loved ones or who were injured in the Las Vegas shooting last night, hear what Jesus has to say about these kinds of tragedies and the response He desired people would have when tragedy strikes.
